Our Aim

We aim to make our resources and services accessible to all Library users.

Please do not hesitate to contact Library staff should you need assistance in using the Library or wish to discuss individual requirements. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to improve our services.

The Library has services and facilities for people with disabilities at all sites.

Enabling Services provides facilities and services in many of the libraries.

Our Offer

We offer the following services to help everyone make the best use of our resources.

Induction and Tours

Each site has a contact who can discuss available support to enable you to make best use of the Library including arranging a tour or induction session with a relevant member of staff.

Retrieval Service

All the libraries offer a retrieval (or fetching) service for students who may struggle to access our shelves or carry items. In most case the service can be provided on an ‘as needed’ basis although we recommend you contact your  library in advance if you want to have items waiting for you or to ensure someone is available.

The service includes:

  • Accompanying a student while they browse.
  • Helping students navigate the book sequence.
  • Retrieving items in advance for students to collect.

Items in Other Formats

If you are struggling to access any of our resources due to the format it is in we can help you by:

  • providing reformatted scans of items held by the library through the Document Supply Service (copyright permitting).
  • liaising with publishers and resource suppliers to find suitable alternative formats.
  • providing support in using individual database or resources.

Please submit all requests through the Document Supply Service on WebCat including details of what you need and the required format.

Postal Loans and Document Supply Service

If you find it hard to visit the library in person we can help you with access to the University of Southampton  Library stock by:

  • posting items that can be borrowed to an address of your choice.
  • providing scans of items held by the library. (copyright permitting)

Loan Periods

All students can keep long loan items until their due date unless they are recalled for use by another user.

Students who might benefit from longer loan periods on other types of loans, (course collection or week loans) or on items that have been recalled, will be considered on a case by case base. Please contact the loans department for your library to discuss your needs.
