Resources for art and design

Introduction to Special Collections at WSA

The Special Collections held in the Library at Winchester School of Art comprise the Artists’ Books Collection, the Knitting Reference Library (KRL), Visionaires and the Winchester School of Art Archive. With the exception of the KRL books, all Special Collections can be viewed by appointment only (contact details can be found at the bottom of this page).

The Artists’ Book collection includes over 1,500 items dating from the 1960s to the present day.  The Knitting Reference Library includes books, journals, magazines, knitting patterns and a small handling collection. The published works date from the Victorian period to the present day.

The University of Southampton’s online library catalogue WebCat holds information on all of the books, journals & magazines held in these collections.  It can be accessed at:

Artists' Book Collection

The Artists' Books Collection concentrates on books made either by hand or in limited editions, and was started in 1966. It now includes over 1000 items and is a collection of national standing. It also includes books created or designed by University staff, and we have acquired a range of books from the final year degree shows at WSA.

Knitting Reference Library (KRL)

The Knitting Reference Library (KRL) includes the published works collected by Montse Stanley, Richard Rutt and Jane Waller. These comprise books, exhibition catalogues, knitting patterns, journals and magazines. More information can be found on our dedicated website.

Visionaire is a special fashion publication, produced four times a year. Each issue is designed, themed and created by a photographer, designer or art director and produced in a limited edition with no advertising.  Formats and styles vary enormously, so the collection offers rich inspiration in ideas, style and presentation. WSA Library hold all Visionaires published since 1994.

WSA Archive

The Winchester School of Art archive has a range of materials dating back to 1910, and includes undergraduate and postgraduate prosepctuses, degree show catalogues, promotional course leaflets, open day flyers and student degree show cards and many other forms of ephemera relating to the school. All material is catalogued and can be searched for using WebCat.
