Newspaper databases

This listing includes all the newspaper databases we subscribe to. Some freely available newspaper databases of particular interest are also included.

The Times

There is a complete set of the Times on microfilm on Level 1 of the Hartley Library, along with reading and copying equipment. Alternatively, you can access the Times Digital Archive (1785-2006) online via Southampton Public Libraries. In the microforms area you will find the print Official Index to the Times (1905 - current). For the earlier period, 1785-1905 we have the online Palmer's Index to the Times (see link below)

Illustrated London News

The Illustrated London News was a British illustrated paper, launched in 1842, and aimed at the growing mass market. An excellent source of both drawn illustrations and photographs. The ILN closed in 1989.

We have a good run of print copies at quarto per A and at WSA (check WebCat or DelphiS for details). Pre 1853 copies in Hartley are in Rare Books. Southampton Public Library has a complete run. We do not have an index, but this Year Grid might help you locate relevant articles:
