Hartley Library Quiet Study Areas

  • The Hartley Library offers a variety of quiet study areas on its five levels.
  • Two dedicated quiet study rooms on Level 5.
  • A quiet study area is located on Level 4 in the Turner Sims area of the Library
  • During exam periods many study desks in quiet areas of the Library will be made available for users to reserve for up to four hours per day per space.  To book online please go to http://libcal.soton.ac.uk/booking/studydesks alternatively you can visit the Hartley Library Reception Desk on Level 2 or email librecep@soton.ac.uk   A University email address is required to book these.  We reserve the right to re-book a resource to another group, if a group does not show up 15 minutes after the booking time.

Hartley Study Desks

  1. Study desks can be booked during library opening hours.
  2. Study desks can be booked for a maximum of four hours per person per day.
  3. Study desks can be booked on the current day only.

Health Services Library Group Study Rooms

  • The Health Services Library has three bookable group study areas, each of which will accommodate a maximum of 10.
  • Group Study Rooms 1 & 2 have electrical sockets, whiteboard, and a PC with large touch screen display.
  • Group Study Room 3 has no IT facilities, but does have a large table for group discussion.
  • Bookings can be made online at http://libcal.soton.ac.uk/booking/hslgsr or alternatively at the Health Services Library Loans Desk.
      • One member of the group must show their ID card.
      • We also accept bookings by email (hslib@soton.ac.uk) or phone (023 8120 6541).
      • A University or UHS email address is required to book these.

NHS PCs Bookings

  • For booking NHS PCs: http://libcal.soton.ac.uk/booking/nhspcs  A University or UHS email address is required to book these.  We reserve the right to re-book a resource to another group, if a group does not show up 15 minutes after the booking time.

National Oceanographic Library Study Areas

The National Oceanographic Library offers a variety of study areas on its three levels.

Bookable Meeting Rooms

  • Located on level 5 of the library.
  • The Blue, Yellow, Purple and Red room can all be booked by sending an email to estates@noc.ac.uk or in person at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton Reception Desk.
  • The Green room is available to use without a booking.
  • An on-line booklet gives the details of all the bookable meeting rooms at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton including the meeting rooms in the library.
  • Each room has a large monitor and SmartBoard overlay.
  • Instructions explaining the use of the SmartBoard and other Audio Visual equipment are in a wall mounted holder in each room.
  • Each room has electrical sockets.

Quiet Study Area

The entrance floor (level 4) of the library is designated as a quiet study area in the library.

  • Electrical sockets are available in this area.

Silent Study Area

  • The lower floor (level 2) of the library is designated as a silent study area.
  • Electrical sockets are available in this area.

 

Hartley Library

The Hartley Library has 17 group study rooms (GSRs) throughout levels 1, 2, 3 and 5. The rooms have a variety of facilities, for example: PCs; electrical sockets; internet points and whiteboards. A selection have U-Touch touch screen wall monitors (3A, 3B, 3C, 2A, 5019 and 5025), 2D has two LED wall monitors and 5037 has a touch screen table linked to an LED wall monitor. There are further LED wall monitors in 1A, 1C, 2B and 3F.

Rooms 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3D, 3E and 3F will accommodate a maximum of 6 students. Rooms 3B and 3C a maximum of 10 and rooms 3A a maximum of 12.

There are 4 more rooms on Level 5. The two larger rooms (5019 and 5025) can hold two groups of 6 or one group of 12, the smaller room (5023) can hold one group of 6 and a further mid-sized room (5037) can hold 8.

Hartley GSRs

  1. Group study rooms are available for current students engaging in group study only, no staff or visitor usage of the rooms is allowed.
  2. Group study rooms can be booked during library opening hours.
  3. Group study rooms can be booked for a maximum of three hours per group per day.
  4. Group study rooms can be booked two weeks in advance.
  5. Group study rooms are not available for individual study.
  6. Group study rooms should only be booked if you have the minimum number of people required and no more than the maximum stated for the room.

Library & Learning Commons study areas

The Library & Learning Commons (Avenue Campus) offers a variety of study areas .

Quiet study areas

  • Located in the South Corridor of the upper-second-level, access to both our quiet study rooms (2083 & 2085) is well signed.
  • These rooms have a mix of desks with electrical sockets for laptops and charging points, a small number of fixed PCs, and some study desks with no electrical points. 
  • There are also individual quiet study pods along the right side of this corridor. 

Group study

There are many areas for group study within the Library & Learning Commons

  • The main resource rooms (2153, 2155, 2159)  all have desks which facilitate group study, there are also a number of group study pods along the North Corridor close to the Help and Information desk.
     
  • Bookable group study room (2087) - there are two bookable areas within the Group Study Room (R2087) located in the South Corridor.  Each area will accommodate a maximum of 5 people and has an AV screen with laptop connections and Skype facilities. Note: these two areas are not soundproofed from each other. If you require audio facilities, are planning to use this space for Skype, or, require a group booking for 6-10 people, you will need to book both areas: 2087A (door-side) & 2087B (window-side).   To book both areas each area needs to be booked by a different group member.
