Doors and Lifts

The Library is located on Level A of the South Academic Block at Southampton General Hospital (ground level from the South Academic Block, or two floors down from the hospital's Main Entrance). A lift is located in the Laboratory & Pathology Block entrance which serves all floors, including Level C for the Main Entrance.

The South Academic Block and Laboratory & Pathology Block entrances are both served by double automatic doors. The Health Services Library is served by a double door, one side of which is automatic. The entrance is followed immediately by a security barrier with access width of 92 cm.

The Health Services Library itself is contained on a single floor. All doors within the library are manual, the door to the iSolutions workstation cluster is fitted with a self-closing mechanism.

There is on-site parking for University Hospital Southampton permit holders and blue-badge holders. There is visitor parking available, though hospital parking charges apply. On-street parking is limited, and subject to time restrictions (usually one hour).

Wheelchair accessible toilets are located in the corridor outside the library (opposite the cafeteria). There are also standard toilets in the South Academic Block.

Fire and Emergency Procedures

In the event of a fire, you will hear a loud continuous bell and should leave the building immediately via the nearest fire exit. Library staff will direct you towards the exit and you are then required to move towards the fire assembly point which in the car park opposite the South Academic Block entrance

An intermittent bell indicates a fire alarm has been triggered in an adjacent area, but you do not need to evacuate.

First Aid

There is no designated first-aider present in the Library, however there are a number of staff located within the South Academic Block and Laboratory & Pathology Block who have first-aid training. If you find yourself in difficulty please report to the Loans Desk or one of the Library offices and a member of staff will contact a first-aider immediately.

Please refer to the accessibility information for the Health Services Library which is provided on the DisabledGo website.

Library Service Disability Contacts

The library disability contacts can advise on using individual library sites and help you identify additional resources or staff to support you.
