Library Exhibitions and Events: Stroppy Objects

The University of Southampton Library offers a varied programme of events and exhibition across its sites.

Stroppy Objects: belongings with opinions

"The Sexy but Serious Scent is a magic perfume that allows one to be as glamorous as one wishes but still be taken seriously, inspired by Pop artist Pauline Boty. An advertising poster explaining the benefits of this perfume accompanies.

The Sexy But Serious Scent empowers women to have the confidence to dress as they please whilst still being intellectual – applying their knowledge to transform lives."

Exhibition statement

"Innocent dressing gown is embellished with stroppy text that reflect the lessons I learned in lockdown.

Throw on The Righteous Robe, which reminds you that there are other things in life outside of earning more, owning more and looking your best. See your family, friends and make working part-time your goal: even if society judges you for it. In this world, working forty hours a week is highly illegal."

About

An exhibition formed of a series of artworks made from found objects, which can be seen as extensions of “Readymades”. All of them use text in the design to humorously express Cat's frustration with various subjects in the format of fake beauty products or embroidered clothing. Cat's work is critical of our social media, the value of women to be beautiful over other qualities, and work culture, capitalism and the nine-to-five lifestyle.
