About
Topographies is a collaboration between BA Fine Art and BA Textiles students from Winchester School of Art. The project took its starting point from geological maps from the National Oceanographic Library Archives. Students were asked to respond to openly through the lens of their own practice and interests as makers.
The project was launched with talks from Dr Kate Parks (Geography) and Dr Esther Sumner (Marine Biology), which explored how maps are made, including the representation of vast land masses and contours, and the use of colour, symbols and language.
A talk from Dave Gibbons (Photomedia, WSA), explored imaging and enlarging the archival material, the breakdown of printed matter and a fascination with the maps' discolouration, torn edges and archival stamps.
Emma Guest and Catherine Polley (University Library) offered students insights into the National Oceanographic Library archive materials and how artists' have used maps to create artists' books.
