Reading Lists for students - Text Guide

Quick and easy access to the resources recommended by your lecturers

 

How to access your Reading List?

A link to your Reading List in embedded in your Blackboard site.

You will find it under Resources and Support Materials, or the Books & Tools section.

 

 

You can also access your reading list directly via the reading list software provider. Go directly to the system itself and browse all available Reading Lists under https://soton.rl.talis.com/index.html.

 

 

There is also a link to the Reading List system on the menu bar under Library links and help (Library Search).

 

What is included?

You Reading List gives you direct access to electronic resources and displays real-time information about the library availability of print books.

  • Select VIEW ONLINE to directly access electronic resources e.g. eBooks or articles or documents
  • Select VIEW AVAILABILITY to find real-time information about library holdings and where to find your books 

 

 

Your tutor has set a reading importance for each resource on your list "essential" or "additional".

  • You will find each indication within the reference
  • You will later have the option to filter your list by importance

 

 

Your list might be long and divided into sections for each week, theme or both. You can jump to each section by using the Table of Contents menu. 

 

 

You can filter your list in different ways to make it easier for you to set priorities. You can filter by Resource type, your personal intentions, reading importance or your personal notes.

You will find the filter on top of your list.

 

 

You can display your list in your preferred referencing style. i.e. Leeds Beckett Harvard, APA or OSCOLA. Find the selection within the citation style menu.

 

What can I do with my Reading List?

Your Reading List gives you the option of setting your reading intention for each resource to help you to organise your work according to your individual study plan.

  • Select the Reading Intention Menu to the right of the VIEW button and select your intention
  • You will later be able to filter your list by this selection

 

 

You can personalise your Reading List further by adding a personal note to each resource. You can add resources to your own bookmarks and download individual RIS files for your reference manager.

  • Select the 3 vertical dot menu to find these options
  • You can also report a broken link, should that be the case
  •  

 

You can export and later print your reading list in different formats. Whether you need to include the reference later as RIS file or just prefer to have a paper copy to add your notes in this way.

  • You will find the export options on top of your list, next to the title under VIEW & EXPORT
