FAQs: External Visitors

  • Can I visit as an external user?

External visitors can use the library for reference and have open access to books and journals.  If you are an external visitor please contact the library prior to your visit.  This gives you the chance to find out whether the information you require is available and will help you get the most out of the visit.

Graduates of the University can apply for an Alumni card.  For more information, visit the .

  • Can I borrow books as an external user?

Any external user wishing to borrow books will be required to pay an annual subscription. Application forms are available at the loans desk and you will need to bring proof of ID: one personal (e.g. driving licence) and one address (e.g. a utility bill dated within the last six months). All applications are at the discretion of the librarian, but if approved then you will be asked to pay for the membership through the University of Southampton Online Store. The current subscription rate for a personal application is £35 + VAT.

  • Can I visit and borrow from other libraries?

As a student or staff member at the University of Southampton you are entitled to apply for Sconul Access, which allows you to visit other academic libraries that participate in the scheme. The website has plenty of information and includes details on how to apply. If you are an external visitor from a University that takes part in the scheme you will also be eligible to borrow from the library, depending on your access level.

  • Is it possible to access any of your e-resources as an external visitor?

We operate a walk-in access scheme which allows you to view some of our e-resources, including e-journals, e-books and online databases. Any resources that require an institutional login on campus however are excluded from the scheme. If you would like to arrange walk-in access then you will need to sign-in as a user at the loans desk and will then be given login information that will last for the duration of your visit.
