FAQs: Special Collections

  • How do I access the Special Collections?

The collections are for reference use only in the library. To use these collections all users are required to make an appointment in advance of a visit. Please provide as much information as possible regarding your interests and/or projects prior to your visit. On arriving in the Library you will need to sign in at the Loans Desk in Library One. All Knitting Reference Library books are located in Library Two and are open-access, however if you are visiting to use these we still require you to sign in on arrival.

  • Do I need to bring any ID with me?

Staff and Students of the University are required to bring their University ID card with them. External visitors are requested to bring proof of address and identity.

  • How do I place a request to see items from the Special Collections?

Requests for Special Collection items are made by completing a form, listing each individual item to be viewed. Items are then checked out at the Loans Desk where they must also be returned and checked back into the Library whilst you are present.

  • How many items can I view at once?

The number of items issued at any one time will be limited, and is dependent on the nature of material being viewed.

  • Can I organise a group visit?

Visits by groups of up to 10 people maximum may be arranged by e-mail to wsaenqs@soton.ac.uk.

  • Can I take photocopies or photographs of material from the collection?

All copying of material is at the discretion of the Librarian on a case by case basis as it is subject to a range of copyright restrictions, and all users are requested to sign a form agreeing that any copies made are for educational or research purposes only. Both Photocopying and the use of digital cameras are only allowed at the discretion of the Librarian and a small charge may be made accordingly.

  • I would like to use some of your material for publication purposes, how can I arrange this?

Requests for copies required for publication may be made by email to wsaenqs@soton.ac.uk as the items may be subject to copyright. Copies for publication will be arranged through the University of Southampton Library and are subject to charges.
