Public Libraries

Accessing ebooks from Public Libraries

If you are registered with a public library you will be able to access their collections of ebooks and audiobooks using either OverDrive or BorrowBox. Google your library (eg Southampton City Libraries or Hampshire Library Service) to find out more.

Update 28/03/2023

The OverDrive app for iOS, Android, and Windows 8/10 will cease to work from May 1, 2023.

Overview page about the transition to Libby: This informational page for users includes an overview of the shutdown, FAQs, and training opportunities.
Virtual training: Users can sign up for a virtual training session hosted by team OverDrive.
Options for Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet accepted our submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice. Users with Kindle Fire devices can also sideload Libby manually following these steps.

Update 13/01/2022

To focus on Libby as the primary app for users to enjoy and engage with, the legacy OverDrive app will be removed from app stores on February 23, 2022.

Starting February 23, 2022:

The OverDrive app will be removed from the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Microsoft store. Download links for the legacy OverDrive desktop app for Windows and Mac will be removed from overdrive.com/apps.
New users looking for the OverDrive app will be directed to Libby.
Users who previously installed the OverDrive app (mobile or desktop) will still be able to use it without disruption.
All users can continue to access the library’s OverDrive website.

Update 16/11/2021

• We now have the ability to recommend a title for purchase on Overdrive.

After you log in and search for a title, if it isn’t held in the Library collection there is a blue ‘Recommend’ button where you can enter your email.

*Please note that this is not available on the Libby app - only by logging into Overdrive itself.

Update 11/10/2021

• Libby’s minimum iOS version is now iOS 10. To use Libby on an iOS device, users are required to update their device’s operating system to iOS 10 or newer. These are the steps to help iOS users update their operating system version.

• The legacy OverDrive for Mac desktop app is only supported on macOS versions 10.12.1 through 10.14.

• Users on legacy web browsers may experience issues loading libbyapp.com or your OverDrive website and should upgrade to a newer browser version, if possible. The expectation was that affected users would receive a security warning after the Let’s Encrypt change, but we’ve since learned that a warning is not always displayed. Users may experience issues with signing in, borrowing, loading the app’s content, etc.

We have a new Hanukkah book collection available from OverDrive, including fiction, romance, history cooking and food.
