Learning Outcomes  

After completing the tutorials on the subject databases, you should be able to

  • Identify keywords in a topic to use for searching in a subject database

  • Determine the correct use of applying search tools to keywords in a subject database

  • Construct a search statement to use in a subject database

Navigating This Programme

(A) Choose the tab in this box to watch the Introduction.
(B) Using the main tabs near the top of the page, go to the What is a database? tab and complete the activities. This will take about 15 minutes.
(C) Using the main tabs, go to the Search Strategies tab and complete the activities and read the documents.This will take about 15 minutes.
(D, E, F) Using the main tabs, complete the Tutorial on Web of Science, Compendex or IEEE Xplore database. Provide feedback using the feedback tab for each tutorial you complete. Each tutorial can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
Practice what you have learned in each database and apply the search strategy you produced.
