Library Off Campus Access: Home

Accessing library resources from home

To connect to library resources such as databases and journals you will need to use the University’s VPN service called GlobalProtect. Advice on how to set your connection up can be found on the iSolutions page How do I set up VPN on my device?

If you use VPN on a Linux machine or mobile device, from June 17th 2020 you will need to reconfigure your device to point to 'globalprotect2.soton.ac.uk'. If you use a Windows PC or Mac you should continue to use 'globalprotect.soton.ac.uk'.

Off campus access

See our video for a short overview on accessing resources from off campus.

Accessing library resources from home - NHS

Students on NHS courses and NHS staff will require a OpenAthens login to access some of their resources.  Details of how to register for an account can be found on the Library's OpenAthens website.

You will see that some resources in our A-Z Resources list have this padlock symbol padlock icon beside them. This means that you will need to use an extra username and password to access the resource (even if you are using VPN).

If there is the padlock  showing next to the resource you need, click on the padlock   and then use your University login to sign in to see the list of extra username and password details.

Alternatively you can click on the link username and password details that you need for specific library resources to get to information.

Off Campus access without VPN

Some students are not able to install VPN (GlobalProtect) on their computers, eg if they are on placement in NHS trusts. If this affects you, there is an alternative access route to many of our online resources. The video below shows how to use the Institutional Login.

Institutional Login may also be called 'Sign in via your institution' or 'UK Access Management Federation'.

We recommend that you use VPN if you can as this offers the easiest route to access our resources from off campus. Please contact iSolutions if you are having trouble installing VPN.
