Accessing library resources from home
To connect to library resources such as databases and journals you will need to use the University’s VPN service called GlobalProtect. Advice on how to set your connection up can be found on the iSolutions page How do I set up VPN on my device?
If you use VPN on a Linux machine or mobile device, from June 17th 2020 you will need to reconfigure your device to point to 'globalprotect2.soton.ac.uk'. If you use a Windows PC or Mac you should continue to use 'globalprotect.soton.ac.uk'.
Off campus access
See our video for a short overview on accessing resources from off campus.
Accessing library resources from home - NHS
Students on NHS courses and NHS staff will require a OpenAthens login to access some of their resources. Details of how to register for an account can be found on the Library's OpenAthens website.
You will see that some resources in our A-Z Resources list have this padlock symbol beside them. This means that you will need to use an extra username and password to access the resource (even if you are using VPN).
If the padlock shows next to the resource you need, click on the padlock and then use your University login to sign in to see the list of extra username and password details.
Alternatively you can click on the link username and password details that you need for specific library resources to get to information.
LibKey Nomad, part of our BrowZine subscription, is a browser extension that integrates with Wikipedia, publisher websites and PubMed to give you easy access to the full text of journal articles. If we do not have a subscription, LibKey Nomad searches for legal open access copies. VPN (GlobalProtect) is required for off campus access.
When you land on a page with an article that is available to download, LibKey Nomad presents a banner alert at the bottom of your screen. Click to download the PDF.
