Welcome to Hartley Library

Around the library you'll find help and information in the form of maps, helpful staff, our online catalogue and electronic touch screens. If you get stuck come to the Level 2 foyer where you will find the staffed Level 2 helpdesk and the Southampton Academic Skills Hub.

You'll also find the iSolutions helpdesk on Level 2 who can help you with any IT problems including getting started with the printing service and wifi.

iSolutions Helpdesk

iSolutions offer a helpdesk at Hartley Library, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. These hours will be extended during the University Welcome period.

The desk can be found on the right after entering the library through the turnstiles.

What's in Hartley?

The Hartley Library is the main University Library and also home to the University Archives & Special Collections. 

It offers five floor levels of printed books and journals and an extensive collection of online journals and e-books.

The Library has several hundred computer workstations in the building as well as powered study spaces for your own equipment. The wireless network is availble throughout the Library.

Hartley Library opening times vary in term time and vacation. Current opening times can be found from the Opening Hours link at the top of this page.

Finding books in Hartley - call numbers, subjects and locations

Whether you use Webcat or DelphiS you will retrieve call numbers and locations to enable you to locate materials on the shelves of the Hartley Library. These two listings will help you understand which level you need to go to. Once you know your level you can consult floor plans for an exact location.

Getting Help in Hartley

You will find the Level 2 desk in the foyer. During library opening hours the team can answer general enquiries about the building, lost property and help with access to the Library. 

During service hours the Level 2 desk team can also help with:

  • Issuing/returning items.
  • Renewing items.
  • Issuing and returning laptops and other equipment such as headphones.
  • User registration, including external membership and SCONUL access.
  • Questions about group study rooms.
  • Loans and account related enquiries e.g. blocks, bills, suspensions.
  • Collecting Interlibrary loans.
  • Help locating resources and books in our collections.

The Level 2 desk service hours are:  9am - 11pm seven days a week during term time.

During vacations hours will be reduced and posted on this page.

Self issue machines, for returning and borrowing books, are available whenever the library is open. A book drop is available for returning items outside of these times.
