Loans and borrowing: Postal Loans

The Loans service remains a primary Library service, with over a million items you can borrow.

What will it cost me?

There is no charge for the service and the cost of posting items to you will be met by the Library.

If you return items to us by post you will be responsible for the postage and packing costs.

Who can I ask if I have more questions?

Tel:  023 8059 3208

Who can use this service?

If you live or work at a distance from the University or find it difficult to visit in person, we can help you with access to the University of Southampton (UoS) Library stock by:

  • posting items that can be borrowed to an address of your choice
  • making available scanned extracts/articles using the University Dropoff service (copyright permitting).

Within the UK: we can post long loan and one week loan stock.

Internationally: we can post long loan stock.

How do I request a postal loan?

  • Login to WebCat with your ID & password and check on the availability of what you need.
  • Select: Requests & Document Supply
  • Select Request something from our collections
  • Enter the details of the item(s) required
  • Supply us with your address (use Comments field)
  • Submit your request

We aim to dispatch postal loans / requests within two working days of receiving your request.

How long can I keep an item?

Long loan items and one week loan items can be borrowed until they are requested by another user or recalled by the library.  Login to your library account to see when books need to be returned.

Short loan items (course collections) must be returned by 11:00 am the day after being issued.

How do I return an item?

Items can be returned by post - we recommend you have proof of postage.  Alternatively, you can return items to the Library in the usual way.

Can I renew an item?

All long loan and one week loan items are automatically renewed.  Short loan items (course collections) cannot be renewed and must be returned to the issuing library.
