Adding resources to your Reading List and ordering books
How to ...
Adding resources using the bookmarking extension
Using the bookmark extension you can add books, eBooks and articles from our catalogue (Library Search), as well as a variety of resources from the open web: websites, articles, videos and documents to your reading list.
If you haven't yet installed the extension, please refer to our guide.
When installed, you will find the bookmarking extension icon located in the top right corner of your web browser (see image below).
Find the resource you would like to link to your reading list, e.g. a title from within Library Search, and click on the extension icon, confirm by clicking again. Ensure that you’ve selected the title you require so that you are at the level where all the bibliographical data is displayed.
An online form will open displaying the data sheet for this record.
Check the data sheet to ensure all the important bibliographical data has been pulled across from the source record. Here is some additional guidance to help you:
Select the Create & Add to List option at the bottom of the page to confirm. You may have to scroll down for large records.
A second "pop-up" window will open, giving you the option of choosing where the resource should be located within your list.
Add to list: where you have multiple lists, check to ensure you are adding resources to the correct list. All your lists will appear within the drop-down menu.
At the top of/bottom of: you can select to add the book on top of your list or at the bottom. If you've already structured your list and divided into sections, you can select the section here in the second drop-down menu.
Note for students: you can add a note for your students, e.g. referring to a specific chapter, or giving additional details about the resource (e.g. "good in-depth analysis about the Reformation").
Note for library: you can also add a note for the library e.g. specific purchase wishes or any other comments.
Importance: please select an importance, Essential or Additional and confirm by clicking OK.
The resource has now been added to your list and you can continue browsing for further resources. Should you want to review your selection at a later stage, you can do this at any time directly from your list as explained in our guide.
There is also the option of adding resources directly from within your list using the quick Add Resource option. This option only allows you to search the library catalogue for resources we already hold. We recommend the bookmarking extension as the most efficient way of adding a variety of resources to your list across the internet.
Ordering library resources through your Reading List
Our book ordering process for teaching material is directly linked to our reading list system.
We will calculate the number of copies/licenses in line with our collections policy. This is based on a ratio of reading importance, "essential" or "additional", and the number of students enrolled for all modules the book is assigned to.
Add resources which you would like the library to order. You can add them from Library-Search or other relevant databases (e.g. Amazon, publishers websites) using the bookmarking extension.
Once added, “Publish” your list and then request a review from the library. To request a review, select the large “EDIT” button at the top of your list, and from the drop-down options select “Request review”. The Reading List team will now check your list to ensure we hold all the resources and that all of your links are working. Once the review is complete you will receive an email confirming any actions taken.
If you would like to suggest a title which isn't required for teaching but would contribute to enriching the collection - don't add it to a reading list; please email libenqs@soton.ac.uk with a subject heading: "Collection development". Include brief details of the resource required and why you think it will enhance our collection.
We hope you found our support page and guides helpful. If you require additional support, “contact the Reading List Team” , email libenqs@soton.ac.uk.
