Over the past few years, Jisc (on behalf of UK universities) has been negotiating with Elsevier to reduce subscription costs, and to ensure full and immediate open access to UK research published by Elsevier.
On March 23rd 2022 it was announced that UK universities have reached a three-year agreement with Elsevier providing both unlimited open access publishing and access to paywalled journal articles for a significant reduction on current institutional spend. The agreement will provide unlimited open access publishing at no cost to the author in eligible Elsevier subscription journals, including the Lancet and Cell Press titles.

Elsevier will provide the Library with a list of articles published during 2022 that are eligible for retrospective open access/refund. We will be in touch with individual authors when we have the list to keep you informed, and so you can sign a new licence agreement if the article was originally published under the subscription model.
