Open access at no cost to University of Southampton corresponding authors for research and review articles in Elsevier hybrid journals. This agreement is available to current University staff and students; visitors are not eligible. Please select the CC BY licence rather than CC BY-NC or CC BY-ND as this is required for the Library team to approve your article for open access under the agreement.

Steps for Authors

  • In Editorial Manager, when you have uploaded the manuscript files, make sure your Institution is set to University of Southampton and add the funder details if applicable. Click on 'Build PDF for approval' and select Gold open access. The "To pay on acceptance" box should have a total of 0.00 with the wording “As an author affiliated with the University of Southampton, after acceptance and on validation, the UKRI JISC Elsevier Transitional agreement will cover the APC”. If it shows an amount to pay, please let us know before proceeding and we will check.
  • Please select the CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution) licence option on the next screen.

  • Data in Briefs
  • Full-length articles
  • Micro-articles
  • Original software publication
  • Practice guidelines
  • Protocols
  • Review articles
  • Replication studies
  • Short communications
  • Short surveys
  • Video articles

When publishing in eligible hybrid Cell Press journals, review articles and short survey article types are not eligible.

When publishing in eligible journals from The Lancet, full length articles are the only eligible article type.

 

Fully open access journals are not included, but we do get a 15% discount - if you are UKRI funded, please apply to the block grant before submission for fully open access titles https://library.soton.ac.uk/openaccess/ukri

Further information

Over the past few years, Jisc (on behalf of UK universities) has been negotiating with Elsevier to reduce subscription costs, and to ensure full and immediate open access to UK research published by Elsevier.  

On March 23rd 2022 it was announced that UK universities have reached a three-year agreement with Elsevier providing both unlimited open access publishing and access to paywalled journal articles for a significant reduction on current institutional spend. The agreement will provide unlimited open access publishing at no cost to the author in eligible Elsevier subscription journals, including the Lancet and Cell Press titles.
